Black Horror Survivors #14 ZayDay Williams (Scream Queens)

This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.

ZayDay Williams – (KeKe Palmer)

Character Arc:

Not one for the bullshit, Zayday didn’t mind putting the Chanels in their places while simultaneously having the heart to care for those around her, AND also investigate the murders of her classmates, as well as (later) her coworkers at the C.U.R.E. Hospital. She managed to survive two killing sprees, the deaths of two boyfriends, and two random ass career changes. In short, she’s not only a survivor, but a fierce example of black girl magic and Black Scream Queen divadom as well.

Fun Facts

ZayDay isn’t the only black horror survivor of Scream Queens. She shares that title with Denise Hemphill (Niecy Nash) who was just a fucking fierce as ZayDay.

Final Thoughts

ZayDay was WAAAYYYY more interesting than her best friend from season one, Grace Gardner (Skye Samuels), as well as a better “foe” to the Chanels in having a respectable moral compass, constantly making them look like the soulless, insufferable prima donnas that they were. ZayDay had a heart of pure gold, using brain and wit to outsmart not only her snobby counterparts, but all SIX killers as well. She’s a true millennial final girl.
