This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.
Maggie Bess (Rah Digga)
Character Arc
The live in nanny of the Kriticos Family, Maggie felt that moving out of a cramped apartment into the Kriticos’ inherited mansion would be lit as fuck. Once they got to the place, however, Maggie learned that she had to fight deadly ghosts. And, clearly, that was not in the job description. However after alluding the grotesque apparitions throughout the movie and certain death, it was Maggie who saved the family from the clutches of the house, the ghosts, and the family’s deranged uncle. She promptly quit afterwards. Thank God.
Fun Facts
I vaguely remember reading an interview where Maggie was supposed to have died in the middle of the movie, but the director (Steve Beck) had second thoughts and expanded her role. This could’ve been an error since the movie did release at the dawn of the internet where a lot of erroneous info was all across the web. That hasn’t changed much today but still…
Final Thoughts
Maggie not only saved the Kriticos family, but she also saved this film by being the most entertaining character outside the ghosts themselves. One question though: if the Kriticos family was broke, how could they afford Maggie?
