Black Horror Survivors #17 – Reggie “The Reckless” Winter (Friday the 13th Part V: A New Begin

This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.

Reggie “The Reckless” Winter (Shavar Ross)

Character Arc

Spending the summer at his grandpa’s job at the Pinehurst Halfway House, jokester Reggie met Jason killer Tommy Jarvis just before the bodies started to drop. Even though he out-screamed the lead final girl, Reggie showed that he wasn’t so reckless after all by helping Tommy and Pam defeat the faux Jason, Roy Burns, and becoming the sole black survivor of the entire Friday the 13th franchise.

Fun Facts

In an early draft of the script for Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Reggie was supposed to return and be dispatched by Jason. The only returning factor from A New Beginning outside of the character Tommy Jarvis was Pam’s truck.

Actor Shavar Ross’s official website is called ReggieTheReckless.com. There he sells memorabilia and other mementos from the film and his career.

While Reggie has the undisputed title of being the sole black survivor of a Friday the 13th movie, he has never encountered Jason himself. Would the odds be different if he ever crossed Jason’s path? We will never know.

Final Thoughts

Reggie might have been the kid in distress for this movie, but he sure as hell didn’t live up to the role fully. He ran when it was warranted and struck back even harder when the opportunities presented themselves. The only time he gave in to his “Lawd, Help Me!” Was when he was being pulled out the barn by Roy. Other than that, Reggie deserves some respect for being the sole black person to survive a Friday the 13th movie.
