This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.
Kira (Emayatzy Corinealdi)
Character Arc:
What was supposed to have been a ‘simple’ night meeting her boyfriend Will’s old friends and ex-wife (AWKward…), Kira quickly realizes that it’s anything but, due to Will’s personal issues surrounding the accidental death of his son and his growing paranoia surrounding the new people in his ex-wife’s life. Once she realizes that Will isn’t losing it and that the new friends are in fact part of a murderous cult, Kira goes into survival mode and makes it to the end credits amidst the chaos transpiring throughout the Hollywood Hills thanks to the seemingly popular cult. In short, she shouldn’t have RSVP’d to that dinner party.
Fun Trivia
None really to report.
Final Thoughts
The Invitation is a slow burn, but in a supremely, great way. When the payoff hits, it is expertly directed, acted, and edited well. It feels as if someone injects you with an unexpected dose of adrenaline, thrusting you right into the action with the main characters. Seeing Kira go from “WTF?!?” to “Oh HELL Naw!!!” in a nanosecond is always a treat. And while Kira didn’t have to fight demons or any supernatural killer, she still reigned supreme by beating the pure shit out of John Carroll Lynch’s character named Pruitt. The movie was truly a pleasant surprise, and seeing Kira survive the ultimate dinner party from hell was, of course, just as equally thrilling.
