This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.
Fran (Angela Bassett)
Character Arc:
Fran was the sole female on a spaceship that so happened to come across a pod carrying Charlie from the previous three Critters movies and two ready-to-hatch Critter eggs. Of course, the eggs hatch and the two Critters wreck havoc on the space station and two members of Fran’s crew. Not a true damsel in distress, Fran was not only the sole person (alive) who could fly the ship, she also fought her way to the end of the movie, further signifying that Angela Bassett is the ultimate badass. And I’m sure she doesn’t want us to remember she was in a Critters movie so let’s keep this one on chill for now…
Fun Trivia:
Angela Bassett has survived every horror movie she was in (Critters 4, Vampire in Brooklyn, Supernova, and even Innocent Blood). The gray area of American Horror Story: Coven and its sequel AHS: Apocalypse, however, is up for debate. And I’m ready to debate with whomever wants it when it comes to AHS.
Final Thoughts:
Fran was the sole female in the entire movie (outside of a video of a female doctor) and was critical to the crew’s escape. But again, Angela Bassett would probably want us to focus on Vampire in Brooklyn or Innocent Blood as her first horror debut.
