This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.
Freddie Harris (Busta Rhymes)
Character Arc:
CEO of Dangertainment, Freddie had only one goal and one goal in mind when he sent six gullible college students into slasher Michael Myers’ house to spend the night while being streamed live online: money. Buckets of money. But he didn’t expect Michael to actually come home and start cleaning the house down. Luckily, Freddie has a black belt in watching Kung fu movies on TV and managed to literally kick Michael Myers’s ass and live another day. Yes, that’s absurd, but the black man survived, dammit.
Fun Trivia:
Freddie was originally slated to die in one of the alternate endings, but the studio decided to go with the ending that rested better with audiences.
Final Thoughts:
Halloween Resurrection has been considered the worst Halloween movie ever, with Freddie being dubbed the worst Halloween character of all time by not only fans of the series, but a majority of the horror “fandom” as well. That’s slightly horrible. And all around fucked up. While the movie isn’t the best outing for Michael Myers, it’s not solely Freddie Harris’s fault. The entire movie was a cringeworthy affair, but at least Freddie’s fight scene with Michael gave you something to laugh at and talk about. Not saying that’s a good thing, but hey… in a series where black people are the equivalent of leprechauns, at least Freddie survived.
