This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.
Diana “Sugar” Hill (Marki Bey)
Character Arc:
Charismatic, sexy, and about her business, Diana “Sugar” Hill was on cloud nine until her boyfriend Langston, a night club owner, was killed by a mob on the orders of Morgan, Langston’s rival. Enraged, Sugar, with the help of Mama Maitresse, called upon Baron Samedi and his army of zombies to enact revenge in the name of Langston. As each mobster was butchered by her zombies, Sugar relished in glee all the way up until Morgan’s own timely death. Ole punk ass bastard. May Sugar always reign supreme.
Fun Trivia
None at the moment, except that my favorite scene was when Sugar beat and dragged the fuck out of that racist piece of shit named Celeste.
Final Thoughts
Why did I list Sugar as a survivor of this film when she was basically doing most the killing? Well besides the point that I simply can, Sugar could have easily been the victim of either the “what you send out, comes back threefold” mantra of magic and voodoo, or Baron Samedi could’ve betrayed her and took her soul for his own personal gain as a lesson on revenge never working in your favor type shit. The fact that neither of these have happened is grounds to include Sugar in the Hall of Notable Black Horror Survivors.
