This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.
Dylan Bennett (Brandon Jay McLaren)
Character Arc:
Arriving in Waterbury with his wife Sarah, whose parents were horribly murdered there on the night of her birth, Dylan Bennett took up shop at the local newspaper as a writer. When the copy cat murders of The Executioner begin, Dylan became somewhat of an inside source due to being married to the centerpiece of the murders: Sarah. This fact strained their relationship for most of the season. As Sarah got close to her childhood friend Cam, Dylan got close to an investigative TV host named Lisa, who didn’t want to keep the relationship professional. Lisa also became a huge problem due to her pressing Dylan to reveal more info than he was comfortable doing, especially when doing so would reveal secrets he wasn’t l ready to reveal himself. But it was too late. Sarah found out from the man who killed her parents that Dylan had known about Sarah before they met and was obsessed with the case and had originally planned to write a book about it. Betrayed, Sarah kicked Dylan to the curb and ran to Cam, who ended up being the actual killer. Dylan, after being arrested due to fake evidence planted on him by Cam, arrived at the last minute to save Sarah. He watched as Sarah took Cam out once and for all.
Fun Trivia
Brandon Jay McLaren also starred in Harper’s Island, another slasher TV show. Don’t know if he fainted well in that one though. Don’t spoil it if he did or not.
Final Thoughts
For the longest time while watching Slasher, I did think that 1) Dylan was the killer or 2) he was going to be the last kill saving Sarah’s life. Thank God neither happened.
