Black Horror Survivors #53 Michonne (The Walking Dead)

Update: due to unforeseen circumstances, the remaining eight entries missed the BHM deadline and will spill into the next day or two. Sorry for the inconvenience.

This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.

Michonne (Danai Gurira)

Character Arc

One of the baddest women in the zombie apocalypse, Michonne has ventured into the pits of metaphorical hell and fought back with the determination and grit like an Amazonian warrior. Only using her trusty katana, Michonne is someone you seriously don’t want to cross. In both the Walking Dead comic and its tv show counterpart, as well as video games and other TWD media, Michonne has always came out of each traumatic experience more fierce and unstoppable as she was before. It pains the fandom to hear that she’s leaving the show soon, so let’s pray that she goes out in a blaze of epic glory, and, most importantly, still breathing.

Fun Trivia

Michonne has left the confines of her friends a couple of times and has returned. Hopefully this will be the case in the tv series.

Final Thoughts

Seeing Michonne pop up at the end of Season Two of The Walking Dead, I nearly broke my damn bed cheering and screaming like a rabid teenager at a BTS concert. Reading her fierceness in the comics for a couple of years and finally seeing her in action was beyond gratifying, because she represented another bad ass black person in horror, not reliant on the white lead to save her. Plus, Danai Gurira plays the role so well that it will be traumatizing seeing her leave. Thank God for her as Okoye in Black Panther and the plethora of projects she has on the docket. Michonne, I salute the fuck out of you.
