Black Horror Survivors #6 – Lily Ford (Cloverfield)

This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.

Lily Ford (Jessica Lucas)

Character Arc:

Lily Ford was one of the six main survivors trying to escape the Cloverfield monster’s attack on NYC. After losing her boyfriend Jake, Lily remained with his brother Ben and friends as they navigated through the destruction of NYC. After dodging the monster and being attacked by parasites, the group made it to a military post where Lily was put on a separate helicopter and flown away from danger. The same can’t be said of her buddies.

Fun Trivia

Nothing really pertaining the character of Lily Ford, except that she isn’t the only black female character to “survive” a Cloverfield movie. Ava Hamilton, portrayed by Gugu Mbatha-Raw in The Cloverfield Paradox, also made it to the end of that particular film, but she crash landed in the middle of the Cloverfield NYC attack. I’m optimistic that she survived as well…

Final Thoughts

The fact that Lily survived is usually lost on a lot of people, either because they blatantly didn’t care or simply forgot amidst the chaotic scene in which she parted ways with her friends. In the end, we didn’t forget and will forever remind people that Lily Ford is a survivor of a Cloverfield movie.
