Black Horror Survivors #7 – Jules Koja (Channel Zero: No-End House)

This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.

Jules Koja (Aisha Dee)

Character Arc

Jules is the poster child of the ride or die bestie. While her entire storyline was a phantasmagorical mess, Jules made it her utmost duty to save her best friend Margo, who made sure Jules got out of the deadly No-End House unscathed one year prior. However, after waiting, Jules returned a bonafide bad ass and the two girls, surprisingly, defeated the evil within the shape shifting structure.

Final Thoughts

Despite the critical praise and mind-boggling plot reveals, the character of Jules remains a mystery. She’s far from a one note character and I would go as far as saying that she was more intriguing than the protagonist Margo, who we knew from fate why the No-End House wanted her. This elevates Jules from just a typical black best friend in a horror scenario.
