Black Horror Survivors #8 – Ronald “Ronny” Jones (Halloween: H20)

This February, Midnight Social Distortion will be celebrating Black History Month by honoring Black horror characters, in particular Black horror survivors, throughout the twenty-eight day period. Each day will feature one black male and one black female survivor in horror and sci-fi to bring light to the positive, albeit still problematic, black champions of representation in horror. Some disclaimers first: obvious spoilers ahead, and not all horror survivors will be featured this go round, but will appear in later posts down the line.

Ronald “Ronny” Jones (LL Cool J)

Character Arc:

A security guard by night and a writer by heart, Ronny Jones was only watching over the students of Hillcrest Academy to help pay the bills and fund his dreams of becoming an author. He didn’t bank on Michael Myers crashing his gig. But it wasn’t Michael who Ronny had to worry about. It was Will, who shot and grazed Ronny thinking the security guard was the mass murderer. Knowing damn well they weren’t paying him enough for this shit, Ronny played dead until the carnage was over. And I don’t blame his ass at all.

Fun Trivia

Ronny’s character is the first black person who had an active part in the storyline of a Halloween movie since Nurse Virginia Alves (Gloria Gifford) in Halloween II (1981).

Final Thoughts

Even though Ronny was MIA during most of the action, his inclusion in the film was much needed. And he didn’t end up becoming a notch on Michael’s body count board, which is an even greater feat.
